CBE JU Forum 2026: "Policies can help the scale-up of the European bioeconomy" (Eric Mamer, DG Envi)

"The first thing we need, policy-wise, to ensure the scale up of the bioeconomy in Europe, is a framework that allows us to continue producing and delivering to all those entrepreneurs and companies that need sustainably sourced biomass", declares Eric Mamer, Director General of the Environment at the European Commission, on 24/03/2026 at the CBE JU Stakeholder Forum 2026 in Brussels.

"Policy can also help deliver a demand, through private sector buyer alliances, for example, where groups of companies commit to offtaking significant volumes of bio-based products, and through green public procurement."

The forum, organised by Circular Bio-based Europe, gathered representatives of the circular economy all across Europe. Eric Mamer was asked which policies the Commission plans to ensure a scale-up and manufacturing in Europe in the context of fierce global competition, especially with the United States and China.

At the moment, the EU is preparing to launch the Biotech II Act and the Circular Economy Act, and roll out the updated Bioeconomy Strategy.
