European Environment Agency welcomes Moldavia in its network amid oil spill on the Dniester river

Moldavia became a new cooperating country to the European Environment Agency (EEA) and its European Environment Information and Observation Network (Eionet), announced the organisation on 19/03/2026.

On 17/03/2026, the country declared a state of environmental alert following an oil spill in the Dniester river, caused by a Russian attack on a Ukrainian hydropower plant located upstream. The Dniester river accounts for 80% of Moldova’s water supply.

"Such incidents show that environmental and climate challenges do not stop at national borders. Moldova’s landscapes and ecosystems form part of wider European ecological systems, and its environmental challenges often mirror those faced across the region", the EEA said.

The network gathers now 32 members and 7 cooperating countries across Europe, including Western Balkan partners: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo.
