Nuclear: €330m EU funding for research and training; €222m dedicated to fusion

330 M€: this is the amount of funding released by the EU to support nuclear research and training, announced the European Commission on 19/03/2026.

The funding is part of the Euratom 2026-2027 work programme. It allocates €222 M to fusion and €108 M to fission.

For nuclear fusion, the programme plans the creation of a Europe-wide public-private partnership to develop commercially viable technologies based on a European supply chain. Support for fusion start-ups through the European Innovation Council is also included. The programme also supports fundamental research and the development of specialised skills, notably through the joint operation of research infrastructures.

For nuclear fission, the programme aims to strengthen research, innovation and training capacities, including on the safe operation of existing reactors, SMRs and advanced reactors. It also funds research on nuclear fuels and nuclear medicine.
