Electric vehicles saved 1.7 million barrels of oil per day worldwide in 2025 (Ember)

1.7 million barrels - that's how much oil electric cars will have saved per day worldwide by 2025, according to the report "The consequences of the energy crisis: from the fragility of fossil fuels to electrical independence", published by Ember on 18/03/2026.

An increase of $10 (€8.6) per barrel means an increase of around $160bn (€138bn) per year in the global net import bill, while 79% of the world's population lives in oil-importing countries, according to the British think tank.

Replacing imported oil in transport with electric vehicles could reduce global imports of fossil fuels by a third, says Ember. This substitution could generate savings of around $600 billion (€520 billion) a year.

39 countries have a share of electric vehicle sales above 10%, compared with four in 2019. The share of electric vehicle sales will be 38% in Vietnam in 2025, 26% in the European Union, 21% in Thailand and 15% in Indonesia.
