Attempted objection to carbon certification methodology rejected in Envi Committee (European Parliament)

The attempted objection to the European carbon certification methodology, adopted by the European Commission in February 2026 by means of a delegated act, failed in the Environment Committee on Tuesday 17/03/2026.

Tiemo Wölken, a German Socialist MEP, had tabled a motion for a resolution pointing out "shortcomings" in the Commission's methodology, but it was rejected by 46 votes to 30 with 2 abstentions. If there are no further objections from the Council of the EU, the delegated act will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union at the beginning of April 2026 and will enter into force twenty days later.

This methodology, which specifically concerns carbon capture from the air, biogenic emissions and carbon absorption by biochar, will thus be added to the European Certification Framework for Carbon Capture (or CRCF regulation), adopted in 2024, which aims to create a high-quality European standard for voluntary carbon credits.
