Adoption of a bioeconomy strategy, CO2 cars emissions, post-2030: main topics of the ENVI Council

"Ministers approved council conclusions on the EU bioeconomy strategy. With these conclusions, Europe once again demonstrates that it can lead by example, combining innovation, social responsibility and environmental stewardship to ensure that bioeconomy continues to render us competitive, resilient and inclusive", said Alex Vafeades, Minister for Transport, Communications and Works of the Republic of Cyprus, on 17/03/2026, following the Environment Council.

During this session, a legislative proposal to amend CO2 emissions standards for cars and vans was also debated, which came "at a crucial moment as the industry faces growing global competitiveness challenges".

"Our aim on this legislative proposal is to make as much progress as possible by the end of the Cyprus Presidency. The EU's 2040 climate target is now set. Our focus is on defining the policy framework that is needed to deliver it", Alex Vafeades added.
