United Kingdom: early launch of the AR8 in response to the geopolitical context

On 15/03/2026, UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband announced a package of measures designed to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy and ensure the country's energy security in response to the conflict in the Middle East.
These measures include:
• bringing forward the Government's annual renewable energy auctions to July 2026 (AR8) ,
• making plug-in solar stations available to households
• a number of national mechanisms to prevent fuel suppliers exploiting the situation to the detriment of consumers.

"World events show that there is no time to lose in our campaign for clean energy: there can be no energy security while we remain so dependent on fossil fuels," said Ed Miliband. "Everything we do is about one thing: standing up for the British people by taking back control of our energy."

The UK Government's latest round of annual renewable energy auctions "resulted in the largest ever order for offshore wind energy in Europe, thwarting the global challenges facing the sector and securing a major vote of confidence in the UK's clean energy mission", the UK Government says.
