EU Ports Strategy: "The central question remains implementation" (Green Marine Europe)

"Ports are no longer assessed solely on their capacity to handle flows", writes Green Marine Europe in its analysis of the EU Ports Strategy published on 04/03/2026. "They are now expected to combine logistical performance, environmental transition, territorial acceptability and systemic resilience. The European strategy sets an ambitious strategic framework. Yet, the central question remains implementation."

In an analysis titled "European ports: from strategy to implementation", the marine organisation asks: "How can the objectives [of the EU Ports strategy] be translated into coherent and measurable operational practices at the level of port infrastructures?"

Green Marine Europe underlines that even though "the EU Ports Strategy outlines a clear vision for the future role of European ports", "this transformation will not rely solely on investment or regulation." To operate this change, the association stresses the need for ports to "structure their environmental approaches over time", "measure progress" and "embed their actions in coherent trajectories".
