ECHA: adoption of the Socio-Economic analysis committee draft opinion on PFAS restriction proposal

The European Chemicals Agency’s (ECHA) Socio-Economic analysis committee has adopted its draft opinion "to restrict the manufacture, placing on the market and the use of PFAS in the EU", on 11/03/2026.

Its work is based on the proposal prepared by authorities in Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden, which covered all PFAS and all uses.

The SEAC is one of the two scientific committees (with the Risk Assessment Committee) responsible for evaluating EU-wide restriction proposals under the EU’s chemicals regulation, REACH. This draft opinion completes the one adopted on 02/03 by the Risk Assessment Committee's.

In this context, the SEA Committee was charged to evaluate the benefits of the proposal to human health and the environment, the associated costs, and other socio-economic impacts, considering also the availability of alternatives.

According to the agency, the draft opinion will be published soon, for a 60-day consultation.
