British Department for Energy Security and Net Zero: Jonathan Brearley appointed as Permanent secretary

Jonathan Brearley is appointed as Permanent Secretary at the British Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, announced the Government of United Kingdom on 06/03/2026.

He is succeeding to Clive Maxwell "who has served as Interim Permanent Secretary while a full external recruitment process was run", specifies the UK Government.

Jonathan Brearley started his career as Senior adviser and Deputy Director of the Prime Minister's Strategy Unit in 2002. In 2006, he became Director of the Office of Climate Change of the UK Government.

In 2008, he joined the Department of Energy and Climate Change, first as Director of the strategy, then as Director of the energy markets and networks. In 2013, he became an international adviser on energy and climate change policy.

In 2016, he joined Ofgem, the energy regulator for Great Britain ans became Executive director of the systems and networks. Since 2020, he was CEO.
