Nitrogen fertilisers: European Commission proposal to suspend MFN customs duties for one year

"In line with its commitment made at the ministerial meeting on 07/01/2026, the European Commission has proposed to suspend, for one year, MFN customs duties on imports of several essential nitrogen fertilisers and the inputs needed to produce them (ammonia, urea). This tariff suspension will be implemented for all countries, with the exception of Russia and Belarus, through duty-free tariff quotas", declared the Community institution on 24/02/2026.

The Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maroš Šefčovič, had announced the European Commission's decision to suspend MFN customs duties on certain fertilisers during 2026 in order to "reduce CBAM-related costs", at a press conference on 07/01/2026.

The initiative "is also part of wider efforts to guarantee the EU's food sovereignty and economic security in an uncertain global context", says the European Commission, adding that quotas would be introduced to adjust the measure to the needs of the European market.
