EP: launch of the Exposome Alliance to tackle the environmental and social drivers of chronic disease

"A coordinated effort to tackle the environmental and social drivers of Europe’s growing chronic disease burden and shift EU policy decisively towards prevention"; this is the definition of the Exposome Alliance, launched in the European Parliament on 24/02/2025.

The Alliance, convened by MEP Christophe Clergeau (S&D), brings together MEPs from EPP, Renew, S&D and Greens groups, scientists and civil society organisations, around a common objective: "reducing cancer, cardiovascular, respiratory and other non-communicable diseases by addressing the lifelong exposures that drive them and ensure citizen age healthily".

The exposome is the totality of environmental, chemical, social and lifestyle exposures that shape health across the entire life course. "The growing scientific consensus on the exposome is estimated to account for up to 90% of health-negative outcomes", highlight the speakers.

To tackle this issue, the Alliance considers three strategic priorities for the next EU Multiannual Financial Framework (2028-2034) :
