Duty of care: verdict of the case against TotalEnergies expected on 25/06/2026 (Paris Court)

The verdict in the legal proceedings brought against TotalEnergies for breach of its duty of care "will be handed down on 25/06/2026", said the judges at the Paris Court, following a hearing on 19 and 20/02/2026.

The oil major was being heard as part of the climate litigation initiated in 2020 by NotreAffaire à Tous, Sherpa, France Nature Environnement, ZEA and the City of Paris. The aim is to "force the multinational oil company to stop contributing to the worsening of climate change".

As Notre Affaire à Tous campaign manager Justine Ripoll told News Tank on 15/01/2026, "the holding of this hearing marks a milestone victory". The case can now be judged on its merits, after numerous procedural debates initiated by the company.

At the end of the two-day hearing, she said: "We leave confident in the solidity of our legal arguments, in the clarity of the climate science, and hopeful in the judges' ability to force the company to do its part in the fight against climate change".

She adds that "the company's climate impunity has lasted far too long".
