EU/Nitrates Directive: use of Renure fertilisers authorised above 170 kg of nitrogen per ha per year

Allowing the use of Renure (REcovered Nitrogen from manure) fertilisers in excess of the spreading limit laid down in the Nitrates Directive: this is he aim of the amendment adopted by the European Commission on 09/02/2026.

Thanks to the amendment formally adopted by the Commission, EU Member States can authorise the use of certain manure-based fertilisers in excess of 170 kg of nitrogen per hectare per year, and up to an additional limit of 80 kg of nitrogen per hectare per year.

" Member States and farmers will thus be able to replace chemical fertilisers with Renure fertilisers. This use will take place under safe conditions, guaranteeing the protection of water and the environment. It will also reduce costs for farmers and strengthen the strategic autonomy of the EU's agricultural sector by reducing its dependence on imported fertilisers", said the European Commission.
