European Parliament: Pierfrancesco Maran (S&D) elected as Chair of the ENVI Committee

Pierfrancesco Maran (S&D, Italia) is elected as Chair of the ENVI Committee, with 59 votes out of 78, on 09/02/2026. Also candidate to this role, Roman Haider (Patriots for Europe, Austria) got 19 votes.

He succeeds to Antonio Decaro (S&D, Italia), elected in July 2024, which he thanks for "his leadership in this first part of the mandate". The former ENVI Committee Chair has been elected President of Apulia region (Puglia), during the Italian regional elections.

As new chair, he intends to "serve with a spirit of service and full dedication to ensure that the ENVI Committee remains the heart of the European policymaking. We must maintain this central role, because for many of our citizens, climate change is a visible reality, not a theoretical debate".

He added : "We must be resolute in continuing in the transition that we have embarked on. This means implementing the Green Deal, while making fixes when necessary. But it also means recognizing that our vulnerability is not only environmental. It also strategic and [...] require ressources independence".
