France's climate ambitions: the European resolution adopted by the National Assembly

The European resolution aimed at reaffirming France's climate ambitions at European level was adopted by the National Assembly on 04/02/2026. The text was tabled by Julie Laernoes, Ecologist and Socialist MP for Loire-Atlantique, on behalf of the European Affairs Committee.

The National Assembly calls on the Commission, the Council and the European Parliament to reach an ambitious agreement for the rapid adoption of the target of a net reduction of at least 90% in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 compared with 1990.

Negotiators from the European Parliament and the European Council have reached a provisional political agreement on an amendment to the European Climate Act, setting a new binding interim climate target for the EU by 2040, which is to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared to 1990 levels by 10/12/2025.

The National Assembly also calls on the French Government to support the revision of the European climate law at European level and to oppose any further attempts to weaken the target.
