Bioethanol: 19 million hectolitres consumed in 2025 in France (+15%)

Bioethanol consumption in France in 2025 amounted to 19 million hectolitres, 15% up on 2024 (16.5 million hectolitres). This increase is linked to the fact that more and more new cars are fitted with petrol engines, and that there is consequently an increase in petrol consumption (+5.6% in 2025 compared with 2024), including bioethanol.

In 2025, in Europe, bioethanol will have replaced the equivalent of 1 Mt/year of oil and avoided 2.7 Mt CO2eq compared with fossil fuels, taking the entire cycle into account (-79% net emissions in 2025 compared with 2024).

99% of the raw materials used in French bioethanol production plants are local - mainly beet, maize and wheat. The outlets for these agricultural raw materials are diversified, with bioethanol being just one of many. No crops are dedicated to bioethanol, which means that the industry can be adapted according to La Collective du bioéthanol.
