CRCF: adoption of the first set of methodologies certifying CO2 removal activities by the Commission

The first set of methodologies under the Carbon removals and carbon farming (CRCF) Regulation, "to certify activities that permanently remove CO2 from the atmosphere", was adopted by the European Commission, announced the DG Clima, on 03/02/2026.

The delegated regulation includes 3 methodologies for activities related to :
• for permanent carbon removals generated by direct air capture with carbon storage (DACCS) ;
• for permanent carbon removals generated by biogenic emissions capture with carbon storage activities (BioCCS) ;
• and permanent carbon removals generated by biochar carbon removal activities (BCR).

The activities are "selected for their technological maturity and potential contribution to the EU’s objective of becoming climate-neutral by 2050".

According to the DG Clima, "this marks the transition from rule-setting to action, allowing the first projects to be certified and recognised under the EU’s carbon removal framework in the coming months".
