"Biomethane is expanding steadily in France, right across the country, with 803 sites and 16 TWh. The Orne department (Normandy) has 30% green gas in its grids, the French Ardennes 25% (Lorraine) and Vendée 14% (Atlantic coast). Today, 23 departements have between 5% and 10% of biomethane in their grids. In three years' time, we'll have doubled that number, and 20 departments will reach 20% and 30% of biomethane in their grids," said Frédéric Martin, Chairman of French association France Gaz, in Paris on 29/01/2026.

With 33.7 TWh and 227 projects recorded for 2025, the industry is set to achieve the target of 44 TWh in injection by 2030 set out in the PPE 3, which is still awaiting publication. "The target is not far off: last year alone, we registered 5.5 TWh of project capacity. Before the 2022 crisis, we were averaging 3 TWh. We're on a roll," said the president of the French gas industry's trade association.

However, two demands remain on the biomethane front:
• the switch in the regulatory framework from cogeneration to injection. "There simply needs to be a direction…
