Nature-based Solutions and Carbon removal Credits: five projects launched in January 2026

Five projects towards nature-based solutions and carbon removal have been launched in January 2026, backed by significant funding. Trafigura, the global commodity trading company, announced on 29/01/2026 the implementation of four carbon removal projects in African forests as part of the Miombo Restoration Alliance, which will gather €839 million of investments over forty years.

Microsoft, following its commitment "to be carbon negative by 2030, and to remove from the environment all the carbon the company has emitted either directly or by electrical consumption since it was founded in 1975 by 2050", has purchased 2 million nature-based carbon removal credits from a forestry project in Uganda on 14/01/2026 and 2.85 million soil carbon credits from regenerative agriculture in the U.S on 15/01/2026.

Van Oord's Spanish subsidiary, Dravo S.A., operating in dredging and marine work, signed a contract with the Portuguese Environment Agency for a coastal protection and beach nourishment project in the Algarve region on 20/01/2026.
