Offshore wind power: Denmark and Germany reach agreement on Bornholm Energy Island project

Germany and Denmark reached an agreement on the Bornholm Energy Island project at the North Sea Summit in Hamburg (Germany) on 27/01/2026.

The project will connect 3 GW of offshore electricity to the Danish and German grids. "It will transform offshore wind energy from a national resource into a shared European resource for electrification. The project also has the potential to turn the Baltic Sea into an offshore hub, serving as a model for future offshore projects across the EU", stated the European Commission.

Denmark and Germany have agreed on a cost-sharing arrangement to finance the necessary support mechanisms for offshore wind. "This allocation reflects an overall balance between factors such as expected electricity flows and the distribution of project benefits. The project is the first example of two countries sharing the costs of supporting an offshore wind farm and marks a major step forward in the development of European cross-border cooperation at sea", declared the partners.
