27.1 GWh: this is the total of new battery capacity installed in the EU in 2025, according to the "EU Battery Storage Market Review 2025" report, published by SolarPower Europe on 28/01/2026. This capacity is 45% higher than in 2024.

According to the report, large-scale storage systems have become the main driver for the expansion of battery storage in Europe. They will account for 55% of new capacity installed in 2025.

"Improved market conditions and more favourable policy frameworks have enabled large-scale projects to reach record levels," says SolarPower Europe. Residential installations are down by 6%, with 9.8 GWh installed in 2025. This drop is "mainly due to the fall in electricity prices and the reduction in support schemes". In the C & I (commercial & industrial) segment, which remains a "minority", batteries have seen "modest" growth.

The EU has increased its capacity tenfold since 2021, from 7.8 GWh to 77.3 GWh. "To meet its 2030 flexibility needs, the EU now needs to increase this capacity by a further 10-fold to 750 GWh by the end of the decade", says SolarPower Europe…
