A public consultation on the future of the carbon farming voluntary certification has been launched by the DG for Climate Action of the European Commission on 23/01/2026. Open until 19/02, this "Have your say" aims to gather draft certification methodologies for carbon farming activities.

"Land managers, such as farmers and foresters, play a crucial role in enhancing carbon storage in forests and soils through climate-friendly practices, declares the Commission. They bolster the resilience of landscapes and fortify bio-based supply chains."

This delegated regulation will set out methodologies for operators to comply with the Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Regulation (2024). Certification methodologies aim to incentivize farmers and foresters to adopt climate-friendly practices by offering them result-based payments for their climate actions. These actions specifically relate to peatland restoration through rewetting, tree planting and agroforestry, as well as soil management of agricultural mineral soils, including improved fertiliser use.
