Denmark: government launches study into lifting nuclear ban

The study launched by Denmark's Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities on 22/01/2026 examines the conditions required for the possible establishment of nuclear facilities in Denmark. This analysis framework focuses specifically on the siting of SMRs. The analysis is due to be finalised in the second quarter of 2026.

The analysis is structured around three areas of study:
• The economic possibilities and limits of SMR in a future Danish energy system.
• The regulatory and institutional conditions required if the ban on nuclear power is lifted.
• The opportunities and limits for the development, production and export of SMR solutions by Danish companies.

" Green energy from solar and wind power is today and will remain in the future the backbone of the Danish energy supply, but we can also see that it is not enough on its own. I'm approaching the nuclear issue with an open mind and hope that tensions will ease. Debating the lifting of the ban without asking whether we will also assume all the consequences that flow from it sends out an empty signal. So it's not a question of ideology…
