"A Global Plastic Treaty should tackle the entire lifecycle of plastic" (J. Roswall, WEF in Davos)

"What is necessary is that we get a treaty that is future-proof and tackles the full lifecycle of plastic. It cannot only be about reuse, but it also has to take into account the full life management of plastics", declared Jessika Roswall, European Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy, in a panel discussion named "Will We Ever Have a Global Plastics Treaty?" at the World Economic Forum in Davos (Switzerland) on 22/01/2026.

The discussions on a Global Plastics Treaty failed in Geneva (Switzerland) in August 2025; however, the Commissioner declared she remained "hopeful" and is still working towards cooperating on the topic with other world leaders.

"Timor-Leste has the richest biodiversity in the world, with almost 600 species of fish. This is the paradise that we want to protect, so there has to be a Treaty. Our commitment, Timor-Leste's commitment, is to have a plastic-free country", explained José Manuel Ramos-Horta, President of Timor-Leste.
