PowerCell joins the European GAMMA project to demonstrate hydrogen as a marine fuel in deep-sea

A 1 MW class fuel cell power system, this is the contribution of PowerCell, the Swedish renewable energy company, to the European GAMMA (Green Ammonia and Biomethanol fuel Maritime Vessels) project, aiming to decarbonise deep-sea shipping, announced the group on 16/01/2026. The renewable company aims to demonstrate that hydrogen produced on board vessels, from green methanol and ammonia, is "a reliable source of electrical power for maritime applications". The system will operate under real-world conditions to demonstrate the safety, performance and durability of the technology in a deep-sea environment.

The European GAMMA project, worth €17 M, is partially funded by Horizon Europe (€13 million). Started in January 2024 for five years, it aims to demonstrate that it is possible to replace traditional fuels with climate-neutral fuels on a bulk carrier using innovative technologies. The 60.000 tonnes dead weight bulk carrier will be equipped with fuel cell systems, hydrogen carrier reformers and supporting technologies.
