CO2 storage: a consortium led by TotalEnergies wins an exploration permit in Denmark

Denmark's Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities has granted a permit for the exploration and possible storage of CO2 in Denmark to a consortium comprising TotalEnergies, Mitsui and Nordsøfonden, the Danish Energy Agency announced on 15/01/2026.

With the granting of this permit, the consortium undertakes to launch an investigation to determine whether the area is suitable for storing CO2. "The authorisation means that the subsoil must be examined in depth to determine whether storage can be carried out in a safe and environmentally sound manner. If this is the case, the consortium will have the right to proceed with a real storage project", said the agency.

Valid for six years, until 2032, the permit applies to the Inez area, located around 50 km off the town of Thyboron in North Jutland.

A total of eight permits have been granted to date for exploration with a view to storing CO2 in Denmark, four at sea and four on land. The Danish Energy Agency approved the first large-scale CO2 storage in the Nini West field, located around 240 km north-west of Esberjg (Southern Denmark), on…
