Académie des sciences: call to "consolidate research capacities in France" and Europe

On 15/01/2026, the Académie des Sciences "calls on scientists in France to take action to consolidate research capacities in our country and throughout Europe", in a context "marked by climate change and environmental crises".

On 07/01, the United States announced that it was withdrawing from 66 international organisations, conventions and treaties "contrary" to its interests, including several linked to scientific research. The organisations concerned include IPCC and UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), as well as IPBES, UNU (United Nations University) and IUCN. On 16/12/2025, the United States also announced the dissolution of NCAR (the US National Center for Atmospheric Research).

" These brutal decisions, which severely curtail scientific resources at national and international level, also mark the ideological affirmation of a most worrying mistrust of science. Most of these organisations are associated with the United Nations, and it is the world's scientific heritage that is being cut back", the French Academy pointed out.
