EU: 47.5% of electricity consumed from renewable sources in 2024 (Eurostat)

Renewable energy sources accounted for 47.5% of gross electricity consumption in the EU in 2024, according to data published by Eurostat on 14/01/2026.

This share has more than tripled since the start of the statistical series in 2004, when it stood at 15.9%.

The main sources of renewable electricity production in the EU are wind power (38%), hydroelectricity (26.4%) and solar power (23.4%). This is followed by solid biofuels (5.8%) and other renewable sources (6.4%).

According to Eurostat, solar is the fastest-growing source, accounting for 1% of gross electricity consumed in 2008 (7.5 TWh).

The country with the highest proportion of renewable electricity in its consumption is Austria (90.1%, mainly hydro), ahead of Sweden (88.1%, hydro and wind) and Denmark (79.7%, mainly wind). Conversely, Malta (10.7%), the Czech Republic (17.9%) and Luxembourg (20.5%) are the three countries with the lowest proportion of electricity from renewable sources.
