"The development of floating civil nuclear power for maritime is an ultimate solution for the sector’s challenges but it is still at a relatively early stage of development, and many areas require development work, including regulatory, technological, and commercial aspects", said Tobi Menzies, Core Power Director of market development to News Tank, on 19/01/2026.
He was speaking on the same day when the International Maritime Organization (IMO) opened its first meeting dedicated to revising the Nuclear Code, which dates from 1981.

According to Tobi Menzies, "it will be a fairly long process however and we expect will probably be done over a four or five year cycle". However, technologies have evolved and the IMO has agreed that it should now be adapted to the new standards and should become technology-agnostic.

For the company, "operating along two lines - maritime propulsion, and floating nuclear power plants (FNPPs), here are the main challenges :
