World first LNG and wind powered Long Range 2 tanker delivered to Union Maritime

MT SPA, the world's first LNG and wind-powered Long Range 2 tanker, has been delivered to Union Maritime, announces the UK-based maritime company on LinkedIn on 08/01/2026. "Built by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Holdings, MT SPA is powered by LNG dual fuel capability and fitted with WindWings, making it the most advanced LR2 tanker on the water", declares Union Maritime.

According to its constructor, BAR Technologies UK, "each WindWing saves an average of 1.5t of fuel and 4.7t of CO2 per day on typical global routes when averaged across all seasons." They comment on the acquisition of the two vessels by Union Maritime Ltd, pointing out that "these two vessels underscore Union Maritime Ltd's commitment to sustainability-led innovation in the maritime industry."

Union Maritime announced that they ordered two vessels from the Chinese company, as part of their "newbuild programme", including a fleet expansion and renewal, and the integration of technologies, like LNG dual-fuel and wind propulsion, to decarbonise the maritime sector.
