"Agriculture and the agri-food sector are vital to our strategic sovereignty and autonomy. The CAP is an essential instrument for supporting our agriculture. It evolved over the years to meet the new challenges and realities of society", declared Christophe Hansen, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, at a press conference following a meeting with the European agriculture ministers in Brussels on 07/01/2026.

The Agriculture and Trade Commissioners announced a series of measures concerning:
• the financing of European agriculture and the various funds that will be allocated to it,
• the simplification measures and legislative texts that will be included in the environmental simplification proposals,
• the measures taken to limit the cost of fertilisers for European farmers.

No announcement was made concerning the EU-Mercosur agreement, despite the fact that the Commissioners acknowledged that the subject had been raised during the meeting with the European ministers.
