1202 Mtoe (Million tonnes of oil equivalent): this is the total primary energy consumption of the 27 EU countries in 2024, according to Eurostat on 15/12/2025. The figure is 0.74% lower than in 2023 (1211 Mtoe). "Our data show that in 2024, the EU continued to move closer to the target of 992.5 Mtoe for 2030, with the gap narrowing to 21.1%", according to the organisation.

This is the lowest figure recorded since 1990, the first year for which data is available. Primary energy consumption peaked in 2006 at 1,511 Mtoe.

"Primary energy consumption measures the total energy demand of households, while final energy consumption corresponds to the actual consumption of end users. The difference is mainly due to the energy required by the energy sector itself and to losses associated with transformation and distribution", according to Eurostat.
