UN Environmental Assembly: 11 resolutions and 3 decisions adopted; $1,113Bn proposed budget for 2026-2027

The United Nations Environmental Assembly approved UNEP’s Medium-Term Strategy (MTS) for 2026-2029, as well as the associated Programme of Work 2026-2027. These decisions took place during the conclusion of the seventh session in Nairobi on 12/12/2025.

The proposed budget for the next two years is $1,113M (vs $869M in 2024-2025), including $200M for the Environment Fund (unchanged). "The change results mainly from an effort to align the budget with the recent expenditure trends and the changing funding landscape".

The assembly also adopted 11 resolutions, covering :
• safeguard of coral reefs, sound management of the minerals and metals essential to the energy transition, sound management of chemicals and waste, sustainable use of AI, and on finding sustainable solutions through sport.
• Other resolutions focused, among others, on international cooperation to combat wildfires, strengthening work on the environmental dimension of antimicrobial resistance, glaciers protection, and sargassum seaweed blooms.
