USA / Wind energy: Massachusetts court ruling Trump's suspension of federal permits as unlawful

A coalition of 18 Attorneys General prevailed in a lawsuit against the Trump administration over the suspension of federal permits for wind energy projects, the Massachusetts Attorney General reported on 08/12/2025. The federal judge for the District of Massachusetts struck down the measures, ruling that they violated federal law.

In May 2025, the coalition had filed suit to challenge President Donald Trump’s January 2025 decision to indefinitely suspend all federal permits required for offshore and onshore wind development. Following this decision, federal agencies halted all permitting and approval activities.In their complaint, the attorneys general argued that the measure undermined State efforts to ensure reliable, diverse and affordable energy supplies, reduce pollutant emissions, meet clean energy targets and address climate change, and that it deterred investment in the sector.
