2030 environmental goals: "the European Union remains likely off track for most of the indicators" (EEA)

"Despite progress in key areas, the European Union remains likely off track for most 2030 environmental goals", according to the European Environment Agency’s (EEA) new 8^th Environment Action Programme (EAP) assessment released on 10/12/2025.

"Progress is assessed based on a set of 28 headline indicators which reflect the heightened ambition of EU environmental and climate policies under the European Green Deal".

Over these 28 indicators, EU is :
• "likely off track" on 17 indicators such as : energy consumption, fossil fuels subsidies, reducing water scarcity, reducing environmental inequalities or reducing the total amount of waste generated ;
• and "off track" on 5 indicators : GHG emissions from land use, land-use change and forestry, climate-related economic losses, circular material use rate, area under organic farming, and consumption footprint.

"The EU has already transgressed several planetary boundaries (17) and climate risks in Europe continue to accelerate, with several already reaching critical levels", continued the EEA.
