Biogases: 22bcm produced in Europe in 2024, "a modest growth" led by biomethane demand (EBA report)

22bcm of natural gases (biogas and biomethane) have been produced in the European countries (EU-27 and six others States) in 2024, "a modest growth" compared to 2023 (21.7bcm), according to the 15th edition of the European Biogas association (EBA) statistical report, released on 10/12/2025.

The report showed a temporary slowdown in biogas production in 2024 (-0.1; 16.8 bcm), which Anastasiya Agapova, technical director of EBA, attributed to "uncertainty in the environmental legal context". At the same time, biomethane production rose slightly (+0.4 bcm). A total of 5.2 bcm of biomethane were produced in Europe, including 4.3 bcm in the EU-27. As a reminder, the European Commission's target in the context of the REPowerEU Plan is to produce 35 bcm of biomethane per year by 2030.

Regarding biomethane,1.620 producing facilities were settled in European countries in 2024, including 1.433 in the EU-27. At least 86% of the plants are grid-connected in 2025, according to the report.
