"Simpler and smarter environmental legislation": adoption of the Environmental Omnibus by the Commission

The European Commission adopted its eighth Omnibus, aiming to simplify existing environmental legislation, in Brussels, on 10/12/2025. The Environmental Omnibus consists of six legislative proposals in the industrial emissions, circular economy, environmental assessments, and geospatial data areas. The Commission declares that "these changes will help businesses save €1 Bn per year".

"We were asked to simplify, and it is always a delicate task. There is a thin line between simplifying, protecting our environmental standards, responding to the challenges and also to the expectations of citizens. The Omnibus does not open some of the very important flagship legislation on the environment, for instance, on Birds and Habitats, or the Nature Restoration law. We come with the targeted amendments proposed in this package to deliver practical and timely relief to businesses and farmers without jeopardising our environmental goal or our health", says Teresa Ribera, Executive Vice-President of the Commission for a Clean, Just and Competitive Transition.
