"In Europe in 2050, an energy system based on renewables would cost €1.637 Bn less than our Slow Transition scenario. In the latter, more than half of the costs would result from Europe’s continued reliance on imported fossil fuels — oil and gas — right up to 2050. This pathway leads to a 90% reduction in CO₂ emissions by 2050 only, while the other four scenarios already reach this milestone by 2040": this is the main conclusion of a study on the cost-effectiveness of different European energy scenarios by WindEurope and Hitachi Energy, published on 08/12/2025.

The document analyses five energy scenarios. Four of them enable net zero to be achieved; one involves a slow transition that will not enable climate targets to be met. According to the document, scenarios that rely more on nuclear power, hydrogen or CCS would be more costly than a scenario based on renewables.
