Geologic hydrogen: first deep onshore drilling by La Française de l'Énergie

Drilling of the PTH-2 deep onshore exploration well dedicated to geologic hydrogen in Moselle (Grand Est region) has begun, announced La Française de l'Énergie on 04/12/2025. It is expected to last three months, until March 2026. Measurements, analyses and interpretations will then continue for two years, until 2028.

A deposit of geologic hydrogen, with "high concentrations measured continuously", had been identified by the company in 2023. The aim of the drilling is to measure the concentration of hydrogen at a depth of 3,000 metres and to assess the associated volumes more precisely.

The operation is being carried out as part of the Regalor II research and development programme, led by La Française de l'Énergie, in partnership with the University of Lorraine, the CNRS, the Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières and Solexperts. The aim of Regalor II is to test the new generation of measurement equipment (SysMoG probes), to confirm the genesis of this primary energy source and certify its quantity.
