Port of Gothenburg: €77,5M invested by EIB to welcome largest container vessels and reduce road transport

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has provided €77.5 million to the Port of Gothenburg to enable the largest ocean-going container vessels to call at the port fully loaded. "This will strengthen Sweden’s trade capacity and support more sustainable transport chains", the EIB announced on 12 April 2025.

Gothenburg is currently the largest port in the Nordic region and the only one in Scandinavia offering direct deep-sea services to destinations around the world. Nearly one-third of Sweden’s foreign trade — equivalent to 39 million tonnes of goods per year — passes through the port, the EIB explains. However, it cannot currently accommodate the largest vessels at full draft.
Thanks to the Skandia Gateway expansion project, the fairway will be deepened by four metres and reinforced, and the quay upgraded by approximately 700 metres. The works, expected to begin in August 2026, will include:
• dredging a new crane beam and quay front;
• erosion protection measures
• upgraded navigational safety equipment.
