Carbon footprint: Raising citizens awareness with an Energy Tracker App (Aurora project / Horizon Europe)

The Aurora project, an EU-funded initiative dedicated to energy awareness, has launched a mobile app, now available for Android and iOS, "to encourage citizens to strive for a 'near-zero emission' way of life", the consortium said on 27/11/2025. The project, which was funded by the H2020 programme (now Horizon Europe), started in December 2021 and was deployed in five experimental locations, including four university communities in Denmark, England, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain.

Thanks to €4.62 m in funding from the EU, the project supported community-owned photovoltaic installations, which the app, also called Energy Tracker, was designed to complement.

The app quantifies users' carbon emissions from heating, electricity use and transport while offering personalised guidance to help reduce local communities' energy consumption. Users can also see how community investments in renewable energy around them can help offset their carbon footprint.
