Colombia: International conference on a Just Transition away from fossil fuels on 28 and 29/04/2026

The first international conference on a just transition away from fossil fuels will take place in Santa Marta (Colombia) on 28 and 29/04/2026. The event is being organised jointly by Colombia and the Netherlands.

This initiative follows on from COP30, held in Belém (Brazil) from 10 to 22/11/2025. Delegations from 194 countries agreed on a text that does not explicitly mention the phasing out of fossil fuels. It recalls "the consensus of COP28", but does not detail a timetable, a roadmap or precise objectives.

" This COP cannot end without a clear, fair and equitable roadmap for phasing out fossil fuels worldwide. […] This conversation cannot end here. We must keep up the momentum, show courage, rise to the challenge and form a coalition of the willing", says Irene Vélez Torres, Colombia's Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development.
