Argentina nominates Rafael Mariano Grossi, IAEA Director General, for the post of UN Secretary General

Argentina has nominated Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, for the post of Secretary General of the United Nations for the period 2027-2031, according to the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship on 26/11/2025.

The post is currently held by António Guterres, who was appointed in 2016 and reappointed in 2021. The procedure for his succession was launched on 25/11/2025, with a circular sent to the organisation's member States.

The circular stipulates that the member states must nominate their candidates. These candidates are then heard by the UN Security Council, which recommends a single name to the General Assembly. The General Assembly then appoints the Secretary-General on the basis of this recommendation. The term of office is five years, renewable.
