Bioeconomy Strategy: "This is a major missed opportunity to correct years of misguided policies" (EEB)

The EEB (European Environmental Bureau) expressed concerns about the new European Commission's Bioeconomy Strategic Framework, presented by Jessika Roswall, Commissioner for Climate, Circular Economy and Water Resilience, in Brussels, on 27/11/2025.

The Strategy aims to scale up innovation and investments in the field of bioeconomy by removing regulatory and market barriers and by tackling the financing gaps. It plans, amongst other, to secure a a sustainable use of biomass. The EEB estimates that the Commission's proposal could increase biomass imports within EU.

"The Strategy claims that the EU is largely self-sufficient in its biomass supply, disregarding the fact that the EU's animal farming sector is more than 70% dependent on imported feed to sustain current level of overproduction. This approach risks further entrenching unsustainable food and feed patterns", highlighted EEB.
