EP: MEPs in favour of a swift and easier implementation of biological control products

590 MEPs voted in favour of faster approval and authorisation procedures for biological control agents, 28 voted against, and 32 abstained, during the plenary session in Strasbourg on 25/11/2025.

“More biodiversity in the countryside, less harmful chemicals in our food and water, and a safer workplace for all European farmers. This should be the future", declared Anna Strolenberg (Greens /EFA, Netherlands), the rapporteur for the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee, on 25/11/2025 in Strasbourg.

MEPs called the European Commission and Member States to deliver swiftly a fit for purpose biocontrol framework.

"Europe is a global leader in biocontrol innovation, but slow and outdated procedures have stopped our farmers from accessing these safer tools. Today’s vote finally puts us on the right path", said Anna Strolenberg.

However, MEPs underlined that faster assessment and authorisation of biocontrol solutions must not lead to delays in the risk assessment for authorisation of conventional plant protection products. They also declared that biological control agents must still be…
