Call for bioplastics recognition as key materials for a circular bioeconomy (EUBP)

European Bioplastics (EUBP), the association which represents 85 members of the bioplastics value chain in Europe, called on the European Commission, on 19/11/2025, to fully recognise biobased, biodegradable and compostable plastics as key materials for a circular bioeconomy under EU policy frameworks, including the upcoming Circular Economy Act (CEA).

Due for adoption in 2026, the CEA aims to accelerate the transition to a more circular economy, increasing the EU’s economic security, resilience, competitiveness and decarbonisation by establishing a Single Market for secondary raw materials, increasing the supply of high-quality recycled materials and stimulating demand for these materials in the EU.

EUBP supported this initiative, seen as a chance to align European circularity goals with defossilising materials, and to place the bioeconomy at the heart of the Clean Industrial Deal (CID).
