G20: final event of "Scaling up Renewables in Africa", co-hosted by U. von der Leyen and C. Ramaphosa

Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, will co-host with Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Republic of South Africa, the final pledging event of the "Scaling up Renewables in Africa" campaign on the 21/11/2025, announced the European Commission on 14/11/2025.

The event will happen in the margins of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, which will take place from 22 to 23/11/2025. It will be the first G20 on African soil. The African Union joined G20 as a permanent member on 09/09/2023.

The “Scaling Up Renewables in Africa” campaign is a one-year initiative, launched at the last G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, on 17/11/2024, by Ursula von der Leyen and Cyril Ramaphosa to promote renewable energy in Africa where 600M people still have no access to electricity.

During the pledging summit, Ursula von der Leyen and other leaders, as well as private sector representatives will announce new pledges for scaling up renewables in Africa.
