UK: First Small Modular Reactor to be built at Wylfa-on-Anglesey (North Wales)

The first small modular reactor (SMR) in the UK will be built at Wylfa-on-Anglesey (North Wales), announced the British government on 13/11/2025. The government confirmed the site selection and announced an investment of more than £2.5 Bn for the project. Publicly-owned company Great British Energy-Nuclear will lead the development, with a design provided by Rolls-Royce SMR, still subject to final contract.

The project will mobilise up to 3,000 jobs at peak construction and is planned to enter operation in the mid-2030s.The SMR is expected to supply electricity for the equivalent of 3 million homes. It builds on existing initiatives in North Wales, including an Investment Zone, the Anglesey Freeport and rail upgrades on the North Wales line.
