French farmers' union FNSEA call for immediate postponement of CBAM, " a matter of life and death"

The FNSEA called, on 30/10/2025, for an immediate postponement of the CBAM, which is due to come into force on 01/01/2026; they ask for the European Commission and MEPs to backtrack on this issue, and for Annie Genevard, the French Minister for Agriculture, Food and Food Sovereignty, to convene an emergency meeting of a Fertiliser Market Monitoring Committee.

According to the union, this tax, which could amount to €144 per tonne of imported urea, would have a severe impact on the cash flow of farms, especially arable farms. "This tax makes no economic, environmental or political sense. Wheat prices have not covered production costs for three years now. Instead of providing relief to producers by utilising the crisis management fund, Europe has opted to impose an additional tax, which is akin to an economic time bomb. It's a matter of life and death for our agriculture", said the FNSEA.
